very beautifully written piece of historical fiction that absolutely wrecked me
more like 4.5, this book was really great. daiyu is an exceptional character with a lot of building around who she is. it covers forced immigration and human trafficking so definitely read cw
When I finished this book, I threw it on the ground out of sadness and anger. It's beautifully and lyrically written - though there were times I lost the narrative. It's relentless, violent, and brutal and while most stories generally end with somewhat of an uplifting note - this one does not. The epilogue ends on an even sadder note.
What's frustrating is that this is all grounded in truth and so while we root for our heroine and her friends and we very much want a happy ending life this story reminds us that life isn't always full of happy endings. It's brutal and unfair, and justice isn't always served but reminds us we have to learn from the past. Can we do that? Given our current climate, we're constantly repeating the past and seemingly never learning from our mistakes. It's frustrating, but hopefully, a story like this is so unflinching and brutal that perhaps it changes one person's attitude.

(Audiobook) sad story of Chinese immigrants in US mid 19th century. I enjoyed the first half- but got confused in second half… maybe just a lack of focus?
I kept waiting for this to take an uplifting turn and it is just heavy, heavy, heavy. Probably one of the most depressing books I’ve ever read. I’d recommend it if you’re interested in fiction about AAPI characters or westward expansion fiction.
The ending was sort of shocking, I’m still shocked. We’re so conditioned to happy endings that the absence of one is just unnerving. And of course this was inspired by a true event.
4.5 stars.

4.5/5. Beautifully written and great characters. I just didn't like how it ended.
