Historical fiction based on the lynching of 5 Chinese men in Idaho. Based on a girl from China who was stolen and shipped off to the US in a coal container during the start of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Less oft told story of Chinese settlement in Idaho. The audiobook ends with an insightful interview with the author.
Sometimes just hard to listen to because of the intense subject matter - rape, violence, torture. Incorporating a mystical goddess aa support provides some relief.

I got the audio book for this one and was not disappointed. The reading was wonderful and the story gripping but tragic.
Four Treasures of the Sky is a work of art historical fiction novel that I think everyone should read. This book is not only beautifully written, but also so well researched that I’ve learned so much. It is not a happy story, and it will be difficult to get through, but Zhang does an incredible job of giving hope even in the darkest points of the novel. This is the story of a young Chinese girl that is kidnapped and sold into prostitution, but that is only one part of her story. Daiyu has to continue to reinvent herself to survive and she finds herself in the American west. The novel covers the Chinese exclusion act and the horrendous racism Chinese humans faced during this time- which makes the novel even more timely as we watch those ideals repeat themselves today.
One of the Best
Simply put, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say this is one of the best books I've ever read. It gave me a deeper understanding of the Chinese immigrants who helped build this country. It breaks my heart to think that as a society, we have not moved past our racist backgrounds. I'll be thinking about the Four Treasures for a long time.

Four Treasures of the Sky is a powerfully written novel that combines facts and fiction about the immigration of the Chinese in the mid-to-late 19th century. Zhang’s retelling of the many atrocities that happened in America during that time is highly approachable and I learned a lot about the impact of the Chinese Exclusion. I recommend it..

Beautifully written, horribly depressing. The ending was so abrupt and unsatisfying
