I cried so much. So beautiful written. So tragic.

I am speechless. Still trying to take in everything I have read.

Writing was beautiful and poetic.

The story .. the characters... how the author writes about the injustices the Chinese suffered in the 1800s through one girl's heartbreaking journey was just unforgettable and impactful.

I am glad the author wrote this novel, but at the same time I am devastated and sadden to see how the injustice still survives today. It is not a happy story. Even though it is a work of fiction, the events are real. I have learned so much and I want to thank the author for researching and sharing this piece of history. Even now the story still lingers in my mind...

Read for book club

This book really drew me in, I found myself reading for hours without looking up. The content is especially important in this political climate; it is important to remember what the United States is capable of in order to put the proper weight on the election. This book is devastating throughout. Definitely worth a read.

This is Jenny Zhang’s first novel. I am excited to see her writing mature, but this is still very well done.

Absolutely a book that should be required high school reading across the country. Not only is it filled with its own literary merit, it tackles part of the history of the United States that is under served in our current education system. The novel is heartbreaking, and despite being historical fiction it plays out in an incredibly realistic way that without doubt occurred to countless Chinese immigrants in the late 19th century. Zhang's writing is beautiful and flows from page to page effortlessly. Daiyu's journey is brutal and long yet easily consumable by the reader, who by the end of the novel is left with a gaping despair at the brutality inflicted upon thousands of human beings, whose only crime, honestly, was not being white. My only issue with the book was that some sections were a bit too poetic and abstract for my tastes, and I was not the biggest fan of the sections depicting Daiyu talking to a hallucination of the folk hero she was named after. I'd easily recommend the book to anyone, regardless.

"In calligraphy, as in life, we do not retouch strokes. We must accept that what is done is done."

This book was beautiful, enchanting and also full of horrors and dreadful things. It was shocking and heartbreaking to read.

What I really loved is how this book is written. It is just enchanting. The way that the author wove the aspect of calligraphy into the story is magical. I loved to see the world through Daiyu's eyes.

"Watch the arc of cormorants in the sky, trace the path a leaf takes when it falls, remember the lines a woman’s loose hair makes in the wind. That is calligraphy."
