Oh dear god I am a mess I can’t stop crying. technically a 4.5 but yeah I loved this book. By the end I felt so personally attached to all the characters and there was a point of no return that destroyed me. It was so sad but then since it is a historical fiction, real people had to go through horrendous situations and so I was already crying and then remembering that it was a real part of history made me cry harder but it was a beautiful book

This book was so dark- some parts of the plots were horrific, nauseating, awful, I couldn't bear to read. The writing was amazing and captivating, I would read anything by this author. I'm glad to see historical fiction about this, something even I didn't know much about. How disgusting, the xenophobia, racism, hate, engineered and reinforced by policy/law and people with power.

I kept waiting for things to get better for Daiyu and for her to find a happy ending. And there kind of was a poetic beauty of her finding her grandmother back in China right at the end. Haven't been moved like this reading in a long time. She didn't even really get to tell Nelson who she was... Urgh
