4.5 stars!! Thanks to Claudia for the heads up on reading the author’s note first (I wish I knew how to link her review), I think this would have been a different reading experience if I hadn’t.

We follow Daiyu through 3 different life altering experiences that have been forced upon her because of the horrific time she was born into. We start her journey in China where she has to leave her life behind, everything she thought she knew, who she was, cut her hair, change her name, become a boy, and try to make it on her own on the streets. With a little luck and natural talent she is able to find a life she would be happy with. But unfortunately fate has different plans and she is thrusted into another world and life, America. She is again forced to become someone new, challenged to survive in a cut throat situation that is beyond imaginable. All she wants is to find a way back home to China. But just when that life was getting interesting she realized people she thought she could trust, she couldn’t and she changes who she is yet again to hide, to find a new life, to discover the harsh reality of racism and the Chinese exclusion act… and this time to fight with the Asian American’s for their human rights.

Each time we shift into a new life, it’s like starting a completely different story, we have new characters (beside the main girl) and a new point of the story. I was invested in each one, but the last switch felt soo late in the story for a plot switch that I got annoyed for a few pages. I’m not a fan of short story books, and while the stories are connected in the sense that they are a part of her life, it still felt like different stories. However, I’m only dropping it by .5 stars soo I wasn’t annoyed for that long. This was a beautifully told story of a history in America that is quite ugly, and extremely important. I highly recommend!!
