I absolutely loved this book about art and friendship. I was pleased that there were no romances and the art was amazing and so detailed. It had strong characters that developed into stronger characters by the end of the book. Fantastic.

A beautifully drawn and written story about the story of a friendship, one that began when Megan and Cass were young girls, connected by their passion for art, through their HS years, when the have each moved on to different ways of expressing themselves through their art. Megan is always playing the safe role, worried that her father won’t allow her to go to the art school of her dreams while Cass has moved on to NYC, where she has found herself and is able to express herself through her art in a way she never knew could be. When they come together after graduation, Cass tries to mold Megan into another version of her, while Megan still plays the caution card. When the pressure gets too much, their friendship is fractured by the ultimate betrayal, the destruction of a co-created work of art. Will they be able to come back together after this betrayal? As the author states at the end of the book, a friendship IS a work of art—-one worth saving.

Wow… all the feelings. This was a beautiful story of friendship, an exploration of whether a good friendship is worth keeping & saving. The story was lovely — I’ve lived through a very similar arc where friendship was lost but neither of us cared enough to fight to save it, unlike Cass and Megan.

The artwork was BEAUTIFUL. Glorious line drawings and amazing palette choices for the shading. I want to buy myself a copy just so I can revel in the art whenever I so choose!

Graphic novels are super quick ways to read a story! This one had beautiful illustrations, even though my advanced copy was only black and white and the final novel will be in color! I really liked the focus on female friendship, describing how Megan and Cass grew up together, grew apart somewhat, remained friends, and coped with a betrayal. I can see why my kids enjoy graphic novels so much!

Oh how i liked this story! And the illustrations are just right! I feel the love, the anger, the excitement, the hurt. And now I really want to go to New York.

Reading 2021
Book 138: My Last Summer with Cass by Mark Crilley

Let #graphicnoveloctober continue! This is reviewed as a YA graphic novel for grades 9 and up.

Megan and Cass were friends as kids when their parents met at a lake cabin for summer vacation. The girls were very creative and artistic from a young age. Their family lives diverge and Cass moves to NYC with her mom. Megan gets to spend three weeks with her friend. The girls have both changed, now in high school, they are both into art still, and Cass is living an artsy lifestyle. Megan is still finding her art, and is afraid to really let her talent show. She does something so horrible to Cass on the eve of a big debut for both girls that it severs their friendship.

I really enjoyed this book. The more I am away from it, the more I like it. The story was raw and terrible. The family dynamics for both girls a thing that bound them together. Lots of issues explored in this book, the art was great. My rating 4.5⭐.
