While this book is a futuristic thriller, it dealt well with concepts of privacy and self. Pair this book's 'shell' with the lunar chronicle 'shell' and it makes me want to create....something
Amazing book! The black humor made me laugh. Exciting and imaginative full of diametrically opposed memes was a great read.
I liked this; interesting concept (Jacob thinks he is dead, after accident & brain damage). This was set in a near future where big brother is watching everything you do (like that television show).
Very unique premise for why someone is a contract killer. Usually it's because they're psychotic and not because they assume they're already dead. The dystopian world that is presented is interesting. Very on the nose for the current time period with chatgpt and other AI . For the year it was published, 2014, the rise of smart phones it might have still been a long shot. The ending is a little too tidy for a scheme of the established size. The "luck" Jacob had in finding the two necessary items in the climax is a little laughable. Also the sudden empathy and need to protect he obtains with no rational explanation is suspect. From the jump he was described as cold, calculating and empty. Then he suddenly is a protector and savior. Doesn't really make much sense.
Very interesting dystopic near future. Feels eerie in its realism.
The narrator reminded me of Don Tillman from The Rosie Project, except Don was charming and funny, and this guy is more like the thug Moriarty had doing her dirty work in season one of Elementary. So if you want to get into THAT guy's head for 300 pages, go for it.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book as I enjoyed all of his books.
I maybe in the minority here but this book unsettled me quite a lot. Not my favorite pick from the dystopian fiction section.
What a strange story. A man, who doesn't really feel alive, doesn't feel much of anything, working as an enforcer and winds up heading back on a path to becoming a human again. By strange, I mean original and compelling. I've read most of John Twelve Hawks' other books and knew his style, but this really surprised me. Surprised and delighted.
