Lots of history and background on the characters. Tedious at times, but ultimately worth all the words used.

3.5. I liked it, I did... It was just very veeery long with too many new characters (that weren't that important). Also, for the first 1/3 - 1/2 of the book it kinda seemed like they forgot the importance of their journey back in time. I liked the ending though and am looking forward to reading the last book in the series.

I absolutely loved A Discovery of Witches but sadly I wasn't in love with this one, but only because it was set in a different time period and it took me a few hours to read the first chapter.

But, overall, the writing was amazing and it still had it's amazing twists that made me want more. And I still want more :D

Definately not up there with the first book but I enjoyed it. And since I'm going to visit Oxford again soon I felt the need to pick up this series again

This really troubles me to give this 1 Star, however, I just couldn't do any more. To be honest, I couldn't even finish the book.

It was too much of a romance type novel and it got to the point where I simply could have cared less for Diana and Mathew. It simply was not my cup of tea.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Group Publishing for the advanced readers copy.

Although not quite as gripping as the first novel in the trilogy (hence it taking me much longer to get through), Shadow of Night is still a fun, fascinating addition to the All Souls series with plenty of mirth, delectable supernatural romance, and - spoiler alert - courtly intrigue! I love a good piece of historical fiction, especially Elizabethan historical fiction, and it's clear upon each page that Harkness was truly in her element with Diana and Matthew's timewalking excursion. From the clothing choices to the dialect and slang used by the characters and, of course, with every figure from history we meet, Harkness's meticulous research is always evident.

It was a pleasure to learn more about Matthew's past and to watch Diana chase a brighter, enlightened future - not only for herself and those she loves but for all creatures and humans alike. With everything that happened in this hefty novel, I can't help wondering, what could possibly happen next? The cliffhanger of the first novel offers the reader a good idea of what to expect, but the conclusion of Shadow of Night is far more open-ended, meaning I'm itching to get my fingers on the third and final book of the trilogy. Until then, that's all for now, folks!
