Bizarre but oddly compelling collection of Moomin-related tales.

This appears of a poster of '100 books you should read' for children. Therefore my son was adamant we were to read it, as we are working out way through the list.

Never having read a Moomin book before, he was a little nonplussed, I think at the content, but we persisted and completed this over a month of bedtimes.

The Moomins themselves feature in the tales, as do a whole range of others who pop up regularly in each other's stories.

Some of the tales are quite funny, wryly so, and I think the humour went over his head a lot. Some are a little bittersweet. I enjoyed the nostalgic illustrations, reminding me of old editions of children's classics I read myself as a child.

These are difficult stories to tempt a contemporary child with, no zany humour and jokes, some quite mature language choices (not all of which I explained as there are so many), and some slightly convoluted stories.

As an adult, I was quite fascinated by these, and had no trouble with them, but I was impressed my son insisted on carrying listening to me reading as I could see there were some stories that lost his interest.

I had trouble with the voices, not being overly familiar with the characters myself, but we do also have a copy of Finn Family Moomintroll so may try that shortly as well, to see the Moomins in more leisurely depth.

It's important to expose children to stories from other countries and other times, though this is going to be a hard sell for many. I'm glad we managed it, and hope other children continue to try, seeing as the characters have made it to the big screen in the last couple of years.

For ages 8 and above.

Sheer joy! Absolutely loved it.
In theory I was reading this to my children at bedtime. In reality, they would fall asleep halfway through each tale, and I would continue reading, out loud, both from the desire to learn the ending and for the pleasure of reading this beautiful prose out loud.
Now in my top five books of all time.

It was so nice to read through this and get to know, at least a bit the Moomin characters. The storis are nice and I liked most of them. There were 3 that I didn;t like and I couldn't understand. The story about the little dragon is my favorite.

I'd love to read more books about these characters.

Najwspanialsza jak do tej pory część całego cyklu. Wiem, wszystkie części oceniam na 5, bo są super, ale ta była wprost niesamowita!!! Jak do tej pory najbardziej mi się podobała. Przepiękne opowiadania!

This book is one of my favourites, this edition of this book is bad - poor quality cover that curls, horrifically bad knock-off Moomin cover art. You're better off with any other edition.
