I'm not sure if this book wanted to be a mystery, a psychological thriller, or a domestic drama, and in trying to be all three it failed at all three. For a mystery, it wasn't terrible, except that with the revelation of one key tidbit and without thinking too hard about it, I knew who had been responsible for the decades-old murders and the modern murder of Jack's aunt. Psychologically not very suspenseful, even with a murderer on the loose and Sarah wondering whether it's her husband and trying to solve the murders. She shows a few instances of paranoia and there's a few events that seem somewhat ominous --yet are never explained. There's one great scene of suspense, but it happens in the final chapters without any good build-up beforehand. Then as a domestic drama, Jack and Sarah's relationship seems to be manufactured from thin air. All you see is the things they don't tell each other, no evidence of what their relationship was/is built on. It's way too easy for Sarah to believe Jack capable of murder and to change her mind again.
I just don't know. I've heard such great things about Gudenkauf's work, but I wasn't seeing it here. (Well, except in the descriptions of rural and small-town Iowa. That part was great.) Still, I foresee a lot of people loving this book.
The fine print: received ARC from NetGalley.

This book has me second guessing my gut instinct. Usually I am right about my predictions when it comes to how a book will end and I spent 90% of this book thinking one thing. Only to have the last 30 pages destroy that. Really good book. The best that I've read from her.
Zero action until about 75% into the book. Here’s how the book goes: dialogue, overly descriptive setting, inner monologue saying the same three things, repeat.
This book had me gripped from the start. I was desperate to get to the end to find out who the killer was. Great book for thriller fans
This book was just okay. I figured out who early on, but didn't know why. I wasn't too fond of Sarah, she was too quick to assume that her husband was a murderer. He did lie to her about a lot of things, so I almost understood her suspicions, but a liar is far different from a murderer. I did like that it was a fairly quick and easy read.
