Cozy fantasy with pretty slow pace.

Pros:
-Liked the friendship with the young prince
-Liked Annika and the royal family
- the concept of a house witch was creative

Cons:
-At 461 pages, was way too long, especially with the minimal actual plot of a cozy fantasy
-I skipped most of the cat stuff since it was so silly and unnecessary
-Did Fin really need to be that much of a jerk to people?
-Some sentences were really awkward and could’ve done with more editing
- Some jokes or minor plot points went on for way too long
-the sexual harassers learned their lessons, but still kind of weird that they got so completely integrated into the group

This is such a fun read! I love the twist of the grumpy, handsome witch and the mysterious, beautiful noble woman. They make a great match and their story is intriguing. I also very much enjoyed the supporting cast of characters. I’m excited to see how they all grow and change throughout the next two books in the series!

3.5 stars.

Okay so my thoughts on this book are kind of confusingy.
I was hooked by the snarky personality of the MC by the second page. He's snarky, witty, courageous, adamant on his upholding his morals, great with kids and cats, and does not think before he speaks. AND HE'S A RED HEAD which is automatically a babe in my eyes.

I adored all of the characters, the MC Fin, his kitchen aides, the kitchen knights, the royals and nobles, the banter, snarkiness and everyday shenanigans were really fun to read. Dare I say I may have smiled a bit too hard in certain fun parts of the book.

The only downside is that the book was doing too much in one book and that led the story to lose its purpose and character that charmed me in the beginning.

It started off as cosy, foody, witty and found family esk but then like halfway into the book it got political and serious which didn't match the beginning vibes of the book. Then towards the last 3rd of the book the politics just became irrelevant and the romantic development between the Fin and his love interest Annika became the focus of the book and that just made it messy? Like suddenly no one cared about the war anymore, the queen wasn't mentioned in the last 100 or so pages even though there were a good few chapters on her pregnancy, and so forth.

I think if the author kept to the cozy, foody, found family vibes of the book and cut it down to max 350 pages, it would've been a 4.5 star read. I think the author was trying to put too many different things in one book and the story went astray.

Also, the food part of the book started off mouth watering and made me proper hungry. But then the more I read, the more out of place it kind of came. Not the food itself but the fact that the author kept using real life food names like Kimchi, Bulgogi, Brownies, Grilled Cheese etc in a world that's meant to be fantasy. I personally would've preferred it if the author made up their own food names instead of using real life food names as it would abruptly pull you out of the fantasy setting and back into the real world and I didn't like that.

But overall it was still a fun read. It's been a while since all I've wanted to do was just sit, read and do nothing else. Like I kept wanting to come back to the world of Fin and his friends. I may read the rest of the series if they aren't longer than 350 pages.

These books were a really fun read. While it's clear they're indie published, that doesn't diminish the enjoyability of the story itself.
