I did enjoy this, but I felt the pacing was better during the first 1/3 of the book. I enjoyed learning the back story for some of the characters too. Not sure the familiar’s scenes worked, but overall this was a fun read
Just not in the mood for this right now and needed to be returned to the library. Would revisit

The perfect cozy read to start the autumn 🍂
medium-paced
I won’t rate this as I dnf’d it at only 34 pages.
I really tried to give it a good shot. But eventually I got so annoyed and pissed off that it just didn’t make sense to continue.
First off, I couldn’t have cared less about the main characters. The only people I had any interest in were Kraken the Kitchen Cat and the king and queen.
I do not know, nor presume, the gender of the author. But I hope anyone reading this understands that when I say it read like a male author, I don’t mean it in a complimentary way. The main character was written as mysterious, aloof, special, and superior, whereas those he butt heads with were all women trying to manipulate or control him in some way. The way the author wrote feminine wiles struck me as only slightly better than “she breasted boobily down the stairs”, an infamous men-writing-women quote.
I didn’t love that the housekeeper (Rosie?) was written in such an antagonistic way. I think there were ways to do what the author was attempting without resorting to some stereotypes and caricatures. Same with the woman I know is the eventual love interest. Finn was the opposite of them in many ways and somehow was always superior.
I also found that the writing quality wasn’t the best. It felt unrefined. There was also a distinct lack of letting the reader use their own brain, as every “surprising conclusion” or “twist” was immediately pointed out to you.
All together, not the book for me. Which does sadden me as I really wanted to enjoy the book and almost held out longer just for the cat.
