There's a caveat to reviewing this as it was written in 2010 and time has moved on. Plus the author is a fitness instructor and not a psychologist or nutritionist which really comes across in the writing. The book is split into two parts and the second part is all exercises which are really good, complete with pictures which I liked.

It's the first part that I have issues with. There are some good ideas in here. It's very basic but as I've said in other diet book reviews sometimes it's good to be reminded of these basics once in a while. There's some information about eating wholesome foods which ties into today's vogue for clean eating.

I felt though while reading it a bit patronised and as if I was being yelled at in print. It's very simplistic - you'll lose weight if you stop eating, get off your butt and get a hobby. Mental health issues are brushed off in one paragraph so it doesn't address the many people who overeat due to anxiety, depression or other illnesses. It basically tells us (I'm one of these) that it's a bad habit and you can unlearn it. Really? Then tell me/us how? Except it doesn't.

The whole animal eating only pops up once or twice and sometimes doesn't make sense. We should sit at the table (true) and not multitask for example by reading (also true and guilty...) as animals wouldn't do this. They also wouldn't sit down with a knife and fork so the wording doesn't make sense. It also says we should only eat when we are hungry and stop when we are full (fair enough) like an animal. The author obviously hasn't met my cat.

There just doesn't feel like any research was done. It mentions we often diet using an article in a magazine but this felt like a bunch of those articles put together. I don't feel I learnt anything new. And as the writing part was so short there really didn't feel like much research went into it. Disappointing
