Probably 3 1/2 stars.
Previous reviewer called it "short stories with bridging material" and I think that is accurate. Each individual story hangs together better than the book as a whole. Seddon really brings the Roman Empire to life in each story. But for some reason, I didn't really buy the bridging material so much, and saw the end coming the instant that the last story began. I wanted to like this more than I did. Perhaps when I think about it a little more I will.
