The Gilded Ones lived up to the hype for me. It's a shame it has been pushed back until next year as it had the potential to be added to my favourites of 2020 list. I am really looking forward to this book being released into the world so I can hear other peoples opinions!

You can definitely feel that this is a debut novel and also the first book of a series, both of those aspects are usually not working very well with me... but with some flaws, this book remained a very enjoyable YA fantasy book, very nice to read and I’m actually eager to read what’s coming next.

The first half of this story was a strong start for me. I liked the gore and then focus on the pain Deka was experiencing. We didn't glaze over it or shy away and I think that was valuable to establishing both her as a character and the world of the story. However in the last third of the story, as we learn about the lore of the Nuru and Deka's fate - I feel like the pacing changed. Deka was struggling internally in the story but was quick to accept an answer outside of herself, and I didn't love that for her. I wanted to see more struggle with the revelation of her origin. Also the final chapters felt a bit too neat and tidy for a book that I know is the first in a trilogy. I would've preferred a stronger cliffhanger, maybe cutting it off at the Emporer revealing his strength and the reality of the Jatu. I don't know. Lost half a star in the last third for me. Also the oppression of the society that Forna crafted was plenty clear without having to have Deka express it so overtly and frequently (a feature also amped up in the last third of the story). It became a bit less impactful by being shoved so forcefully into the reader's mind.

I absolutely loved this book! I was hooked to start and breezed right through it.
I found the pace to be quick and the plot very interesting, nothing I had really seen before.
It addresses many societal issues and is very empowering to females. I can't say enough how much I loved it.
There was a *smol* bit of love but it more about a becoming of self, empowering, and battling difficult situations.

I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I don't want to give much away, but this book is FANTASTIC. Normally, I tear through books I love, but this one was something I wanted to drink in so I took my time.

In short, it's a world in which everyone is taught that girls are born as far lesser than men. It is written into every rule and social norm, and around puberty the girls are tested to see if they are...even worse than the typical girl.

This book features a girl brought up in this world and doesn't pass that test. She ends up somewhere that will test her in so many other ways, which will change everything. EVERYTHING.

A wonderful story with messaging about patriarchal norms and why they are in place, giving yourself and others the power they deserve, found family, and true friendship.

I did mark this as dark because some pretty awful stuff happens, and there is no shying away from, shall we say "sword violence" both on individuals and during battles.

"No matter my origins, there is worth in what I am."

A fantasy book about survival and fighting for equality and acceptance of all creatures. The main character finds her true self and quickly accepts what she really is and then fights for the freedom of all women. A real page Turner.

*3.5

Overall, I enjoyed it; however, some of the pacing is a little off. I love the cover!

I mean the plot twist was pretty predictable but I didn’t hate the characters which happens to me a lot so I’m calling it a win
