I finally found a book that I LOVEEE. Absolutely beautiful, so refreshing, and exactly what I was looking for in a fantasy. Honestly can’t wait to see what happens in the sequel. The characters all have their own quirks, the new “monsters” that are introduced… ugh. I just loved it.

"The Gilded Ones" started off a little slow for me, especially for a YA book, as the world-building took quite a bit of time. However, I found this read fun overall. I'm not giving it a 4 because the pace was slower than I prefer for world-building. The imagery was beautiful, and if there was a movie, TV show, or cartoon, I'd definitely be buying all the merch. I like the magic centered around women who have been shunned and the strength portrayed by the young girls. Once the book hit the climax, I couldn't stop. For a first book in a series written by a Black woman, I'm down for it.

I read the whole thing and I so confused about what the point of this is. I felt like there was too much of literally everything and it caused the book anger. Some many people labeled this the best why fantasy if 2021. Why? How? Deca is the same as the beginning and the end. Still powerless being controlled by others. Ugh.
Wrong timing on this. It was difficult to read, lots of upsetting stuff, with not enough connection to the characters to sustain me. It would probably be something I enjoyed another time but right now I just don't look forward to reading it.
