Good overview of the period, but I really wanted to get inside Picasso’s head and understand the reasons for the changes in his art in that period and felt disappointed that this never really came out. It was readable, but lacked depth and never actually got me excited.

I simply wasn’t in the mood to listen to a history! I’ve learned my lesson — only check out history audiobooks as the mood strikes, not as a hold to be read later. Nothing on this book at all!

Not exactly a riveting read - I liked her book on the impressionists much better - but a good overview of the period. 3.5 stars.

It's lovely to imagine Picasso, Matisse, Gertrude Stein, and others walking around Montmartre, visiting the circus, watching the first moving pictures, and exploring new ways of seeing the world.
