I don't quite know how to review this book. There's a lot of interesting social commentary, which I enjoyed, a lot of well-researched historical detail and overall the writing is very good. It's charming, and overwrought, oddly paced and a bit bonkers. It felt like the author's own personal manifesto, and like he wanted to tell every story in his head at the same time, whether we like it or not. The writing style reminded me of my own ADHD thought processes - at times, relentless. There was so much superfluous, batshit train-of-thought detail which I didn't love, but reminded me of listening to one of my funny, clever friends stream of consciousness rants, which is a compliment, I guess. There's a lot to like, but towards the end there were whole pages that could be skipped (particularly the police and TV staff during the protest) without losing anything from the story. There were characters explored at length who really added very little to the plot, but taken on their own were entertaining. Definitely one I'll remember.

Overall this book was a lot. I feel like some of it was amazing I couldn’t stop and then other parts dragged so long I didn’t know if I could ever get through it. The book is extremely long and really quote a bit of it wasn’t necessary to the story and I felt pulled away from the plot. I thought the whole book would be set in the late 60’s and yet a lot was set in the 2000’s. I don’t really know how I felt about the story but I do know it was really well written. I think I would’ve liked it better if the elfscape was a passing thought. I also think Samuel sucks until the very end which was a relief. Faye is a badass and I now realize I need to read a book about the stories of war protest. also as always f the police is the only message I really consistently thought thru second half of book

Book 7 /32 for 2016 Challenge
