Many of these poems are about age or death or grief. Not in an overly sad way, but still. "... Death is the magnetic north of poetry," Collins says. As it happens, I picked up poetry for something lighter to read and I mostly picked up this one in particular because of the whale 🙂

I enjoyed Whale Day as a whole, my first time reading a collection from Collins. My favorites were Life Expectancy, Whale Day, The Yellow Wood and Talking to Myself.

The way Collins writes about the world helps you to stop and take it all in.

Billy Collins is a wonderful poet. This collection is slightly different than many of his other collections, as it seems a bit more somber to me. The overarching theme really always comes back to mortality, and the knowledge of one's impending death... no matter how far off that may be. As always, there were clever poems and new ways of sharing a poet's wisdom. Only a few poems in particular really stuck out to me, "A Terrible Beauty" and another that I'll update when I remember its title.

Billy Collins continues to infuse his poetry with humor and depth. Love this one.
