Have you ever wanted to reach inside a book and just shake a character?  Sometimes multiple characters?  That's how I felt for the first quarter of this book.  I understand that an author needs to create tension, but sometimes after a couple gets together in the first book, you just want to see them work together as the competent team than can be rather than getting tripped up by misunderstandings that could be dealt with if they ever had a proper conversation about their relationship.  I also recognize that this is a personal preference of mine, but it was a slog to get to the part of the story where the actual plot picks up.  Once I did, things got better for me.

I still really like these characters and find the world fascinating.  Ace and Rory make for a good couple when they're not in the middle of a miscommunication.  I'll definitely be reading the next book in the trilogy, but I didn't enjoy this installment as much as the first one.  Miscommunication is one of my least favorite tropes; even when it makes sense, it has to be done really well for me to enjoy it, and even that is hit of miss.  But that's really my main complaint about the book.  The rest was great, and I'll be interested in seeing what's going to happen next, especially with our antagonists who keep popping up.  Three out of five stars.
