I love this! It was torture waiting for it at the library after reading the first one. It's torture waiting for the third one now. I love Rory and Arthur's dynamic. They are just so cute and there are way too many cute scenes. But I'm not complaining. In this book, they start out already knowing they like each other, so the romance is cranked up to 100, which I adore. It touches on themes of religious abuse, trauma, PTSD, etc. As expected, the magical elements are there. But I still believe the magic and historical setting are more backdrops to the character study and romance. If a perfect book exists, this is it and I can't wait to read the next one!
Bringing in Arthor's ex-boyfriend was a great way to add conflict. Somehow, I loved and hated Wes at the same time. I love how cute Arthur and Rory's romance is. I love how cute Rory in general is and I love how classy Arthur is. When Rory asks Arthur if he's cute enough for Arthur to not be mad, I died. I think the subject of Rory's spiritual beliefs were handled well and I would like to explore that further.

Sadly, this fell a bit short of the first book for me. To start, we aren't reminded of any of the worldbuilding or previous plot events from Spellbound. I only read it a couple of months ago but I was still a bit lost at times since my memory isn't brilliant. And then Rory and Arthur don't actually spend much time on page together; they're often off doing their own thing separately, which didn't really hold my attention.
Still, it was enjoyable enough, and I do love both the 1920s New York setting and Rory and Arthur (and Jade and Zhang!).

the villains in this book were one of the strongest parts to this second installment and i just absolutely love how much the author puts into her huge cast of characters, even to those who seem relatively minor; witnessing the growth in arthur & rory’s relationship was the sweetest thing and seeing how powerful they work together, well beyond a magic link was so empowering, i loved this book.
