Probably one of the most complex and dynamic novels I've read. Can't say that I fully understand what happened, but it's exploration of one's sense of place, family history, and the role and stories of women really, really touched me. Also, it's incredible declarations against the recklessness of men -- I don't think I've encountered anything as honest about that than this book. I feel like I'm going to think about some of these characters -- namely Pilate and Ruth -- for a long, long time. Would recommend.

There’s no denying Toni Morrison is a literary icon, but I just don’t think this book in particular was for me. It’s a solid book, but I found the pacing a bit too slow and the writing a bit too long-winded for my liking. It’s certainly not a bad book by any means, but just not my personal favorite, unfortunately.

I want to preface with two things. 1: ive loved Toni Morrison for a little while now, and she’s really shaped the way I perceive literature, race and gender. 2: i finished reading this book 5 minutes ago.

Enough of my preamble.

Me rn: shaking, crying. Not to be dramatic, but this woman is a god. There’s something so beyond human in the way that she can infiltrate both the collective and individual psyche. And this book is no exception. The love, care and compassion she has for her characters and their stories translates so well; you share the same deep-rooted empathy. And this notion of flying? And how she explores it? Incredible. And so genre-bending, with elements of mystery, romance, thriller, and historical fiction all in one big embrace.

If I’m to make any sense, I might need 3-4 business days. My soul and spirit are weary after that journey. Fulfilled, but weary.

Long live Toni motherfucking Morrison.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

I'm torn because it is a well-written book but the family dynamics are unhealthy for me to read about.
