It would be easier to love Toni if she had a less angry narrative directed at the whiter shaded population. I feel her writing is very talented, but she uses it it to fuel a wound that should be healing, she seems to pick the scab off as much as she can.

This was an interesting book with so many themes to pick apart that I don't know where to begin. Is this a coming of age story? A story about family legacy and trauma? All of that and more? While I loved the prose and characters, I can't begin to break down this book because I don't have the range. There's a lot of great gems as far as quotes though that I love, my favorite being about giving up the shit that weighs you down so that you can fly which is one of the overarching themes that I can actually visibly point to in this book.

this is my second time reading this book. the first time i read it i was in high school, and it completely changed my taste in literature as well as my outlook on life. revisiting it, i loved it even more. this novel speaks with all the appropriate nuance about what it means to decolonize one’s heritage and legacy. milkman is a heinous character, but through him the story of how women love is so eloquently told. i relate to lena a lot, as an oldest daughter with a middle sister and baby brother. i truly think anyone who has had to dive into their family’s history in order to heal will relate and love this novel.

SOOO many good twists and turns. Morrison's description of emotions and minute details that permeate the text. My favorite one of her novels so far, but I imagine I will say that with the next one I read.
