5 stars implies that I recommend it, and I really don’t. If you aren’t gonna tough it out, then it isn’t worth your time, but if you make it to the end, it’s truly life changing. I am better for having read this book.

This was my first time reading Toni Morrison somehow and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of her work. If there's one thing I'm always down for it's a multi-generational family saga, so I wasn't surprised that I liked the story, but the amount of care and detail that went into this book is mindblowing. It makes me miss reading such multi-layered novels. I've been researching the novel for the past couple days online and keep realizing new things about it that I hadn't while reading. It's heartbreaking at parts but also uplifting.

I had such a visceral reaction to this book, and the ending left me crying and with tears as we finally got the inspiration for the title of this book. Emotional, funny, introspective, painful and joyous, I love Toni Morrison and this is definitely my favourite of hers so far.

exquisite.

(is this blasphemous? liked it more than beloved oop-)

the bildungsroman has never been this good

Sublime. Took me a chapter to get into it, but after that it was really compelling. The life of a boy that grows to be a feckless man, discovering his roots, and maybe some introspection. But that doesn't do the depth, the clever (but not too clever) plotting, the beautiful depictions of characters, the political heft... Left me in awe of Toni Morrison's craft.
