A book about growing up and finding your people.
Milkman lives in Michigan with his parents, aunt, cousins, and sisters. Their family dynamic is contentious and Milkman doesn't feel he fits in or is understood by anyone but his best friend Guitar. Once a gown man, his rudderless lifestyle continues until he goes on a quest for gold and stumbles into a journey through his family's history.
Toni M is a great writer and their are lines that will really stick with me, but on the whole I thought this book was just OK. The beginning was hard to follow as time seemed to shift quickly and it was unclear who the main character was, but once Milkman goes on his journey to find "his people" it was much more enjoyable. My favorite part, besides the one-liners, was the unveiling of Milkman's world as we see he is really just a child in a grown man's body. His life is relatively easy and carefree but he still thinks his struggles are greater than everyone else's.
It's pretty clear that this book is not really about plot and is capital-L Literature so I think I might enjoy it more after re-reading or having a serious discussion with someone who knows what to look for.

This book is revolutionary. Toni Morrison makes you battle with questions that force you to soul search. She makes you question what is right and wrong, just and unjust, and it can, at first, feel uncomfortable because you will hope that she simply gives you the answers. But, of course, Morrison won't. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to grapple with ideas deeper than some novels will give you.
If you like the written word then probably you should read this.
It was odd but kept my attention so I guess that counts for something
It's very difficult to write a review for a spectacular book; at least, this is the excuse I'm giving myself for why it's taken me almost 3 months to write this. But seriously, Toni Morrison does so much here: methodically weaving and unraveling the story of the Dead family in a way that puts you right in the hearts and bones of the characters. A non-traditional hero's journey that follows Milkman from conception to adulthood, while he stumbles through life looking for something neither he nor the readers are quite sure of. Morrison does an excellent job of only giving readers the most important scenes they need to understand each character and the relationships they have to each other with exquisitely realistic dialogue and absurdly funny moments that seem too odd to be fictional. Woven throughout is commentary on racism, classism, and other social issues in early 20th century Michigan. This book is rich and worth savoring. The fact that I listened to this being read by the author was definitely a plus.
Massive. Just massive. If there is an argument for America's best novelist to be made, this is likely where it starts.
Sprawling, detailed, specific, complex--just an absolute joy to experience all the way around.

Really interesting and beautifully written, I now fully understand the hype behind the works of Toni Morrison. The story and the themes evolve throughout the novel in a really interesting way, however I do feel like some of it went over my head a bit. And that is not on the book, I’m just a simpleton. But the book is dense in both events and themes, and because of that I don’t feel like I pulled everything away that was given to me, which is why I rated it a 4 instead of a 5. But I don’t put that on the book at all, it’s very understandable why this is considered a modern masterpiece.
