I'll be honest: I wanted to love this book...and I just didn't. Once Howard falls ill, the writing gets beautiful and focused and as introspective as it should have been from the beginning. Before then, it's all over the place, constantly name dropping and much more interested in the NYC scene then on their relationship. Maybe that frenetic nature was mirroring what it was like at that time, but there was no digging deeper with distance. Gooch is a talented poet to be sure--you can tell in some of his images and word choice, but it just felt like such a slog to get to the moments of depth and feeling.
