Ugh, the angst. I really want to kill Sam Kage. I'm also confused by how the books jump around. They flash forward but don't give any context so I'm very confused at the beginning.

I've come to this series late, which means they're all out and I am so glad of that. Just FYI, book 1 ends pretty well but book 2 requires you have AMoT#2 (books 3 and 4) ready and waiting, assuming you want the rest of the beginning of Jory and Sam's story. This is a Mary Calmes story; nothing stays safe or easy for long.

A Content Warning might include: on-page gun use including murder; on-page violence (never between the MCs); crooked cop; side character infidelity; on-page near-rape (MC); and, specific to me and people similar, an inordinate amount of touching of the POV character Jory - which he loves, even from strangers, and I don't for the latter or for new acquaintances, so I had to learn how to trust his ability to say no when *he* was done. Until then, I got to be uncomfortable, because there is a lot of touching. A lot.

After I checked out AMoT#2 to start reading as soon as I finish writing this, I glanced through the most recent GR reviews of this book. I was amused that though they ranged from 5 to 2 stars, they're all fair. You're not going to love this series if you find Jory intolerable or too good to exist or whatever your take is. He is the point of view character. The contrast with Sam is sharp, the conflict from the outset nearly overwhelming, the timeframe is believable, and what Jory overlooks is also believable given how busy he keeps himself. He's in danger, in love, in demand, and at the end of this book it all gets worse, so if you're gonna make it that far, have the next one ready to read. Oh, a minor annoyance: I guess these were serialized by chapter - a lot of the repetition wasn't edited out by the end of the second half of book 1.

Anyway. Yes, I'm enjoying these very much. Onward!

TW: attempted rape, general toxic masculinity

Yeah, no way I can keep reading this bs. Is this what people swoon over? Cuz it’s gross and heartbreaking. All Sam seems to do is yell at Jory and give him orders and fuck him. His brother isn’t much better but at least you start to see him giving AF. Possessiveness and jealousy isn’t love. Gross.
