Massively impressed by the control Hafsah Faizal had over the plot of this book. The first one seemed like it was a little all over the place, but this story was entirely under Faizal’s control, down to every word on the page. She wrote an amazing story. This book was, without a doubt, worth the read of the first.

Re-entry after reading the first book months ago was a little rough.  Comraderie between the zumra and the sharp riposterie was a favorite.  Emotional depth dropped away from the knee-deep level of We Hunt the Flame, and the writing itself felt more assured and occasionally hit near lyrical.  I wish it had explored more reality-based societal expectations of Arabia, like the scene in which the Prince chooses to sleep apart from the Huntress and have a female tend her wounds, after hearing her insulted in the street by his association.  Book-end convergence of the main characters was barely satisfying.

Enjoyable, like the first, but forgettable.

I finished this a few days ago and had to, again, go read a summary to even remind myself what happened. I think these are well-written, and anyone who is a fan of YA adventure fantasies will enjoy this at face value because of the uncommon setting and non-white characters. There is a romantic element that doesn't overtake the entire story

But for anyone looking for a unique plot, look elsewhere.

There's a lot to be said for this being a duology and not another trilogy, but too much about the world and the solutions was lackluster. Everything was seemingly a two-three day trip by horse away, even the most mystical of hidden places. Too easy to come up with solutions to years-long problems, too easy to vanquish evil.

I thought this book finished this story really well. Similarly to the first book the authors writing is incredibly beautiful and the story is gripping. As readers we continue to follow our favorite characters from the first book as they continue their journey to bring back magic. This was an incredible duology and I highly recommend both books

Personagens muito bons, universo muito bom, fui completamente capturada. Minha única crítica é que às vezes demora muito para acontecer algo mas os eventos em si são muito rápidos

Really loved the first book but was just let down with this one. Can’t really pinpoint why.
