Great conclusion to the duology
"Perhaps they were all monsters, masquerading in costumes of innocence."
If the first book was a slow burn, this one was a raging inferno.
So. Much. Happened.
The action, the romance, the twists - fantastic! The character development was also really well done, with Altair cementing his place as my favorite of the zumra.
I loved how The Lion was written; there's nothing quite like a villain you start to feel a little sorry for.
The ending was very satisfying as well!

I didn't enjoy the war time plot and revolution basis..I also got bored by the repetitiveness...
If I could give 6 stars I would. Nasir is the most perfect character ever written

I wish these books weren’t such a rollercoaster. There are so many moments that have me clutching this duology to my chest and holding it close but as a whole the pacing and some of the plotting definitely does a disservice to the emotional impact this book could have.
This book brought me from knowing and being interested in all the characters to really feeling for them and being excited for their individual stories and journeys. Altair is my surprise favorite and I was so happy with his ending because it was perfect for his arc.
Zafira got to explore so many sides of herself and finally had to reckon with who she was when she wasn’t alone. The magic and politics I also found to be incredibly compelling.
The plot was sometimes a struggle. Occasionally we’d be moving so slow that I wondered where we were going…or when? And then at the same time it felt like we would make jumps in the plot or emotional development. So much of this book was a slow burn that when action happened it was jarring and sometimes felt out of place.
I would absolutely read a book by Hafsah Faizal that was more on the literary side of fantasy, that feels right for all the things I think she’s best at!
Quotes
Sacrifice was nothing but death in a romantic farce.
He loved Arawiya, and because there was no one to love him, he loved himself.
He always said the world was meant to be salvaged by the ones it had wronged.
He was the crown prince, born to lead but forced to follow, follow, follow all his life. And so he did nothing.
Lives are not meant for thieving, my abal.
The world could be remade, but abuse could never be undone.
Why was it that victories were forever riddled with loss?
What is mercy, if there is no one to give it?
He left behind half his soul and the whole of his heart.
I did everything. Everything I could possibly do. Why? Why wasn’t it enough?
Not every grief needed conquering. Acceptance was a feat in itself.
What a fool she’s been to think a friendship such as theirs could be mended in an afternoon.
No, he did not love her. The word for what he felt for Zafira bint Iskandar did not yet exist.
The heart cannot forget the one who lives in her soul.
Do you know how it feels to stand beside others forged of the same flesh and bone and still be treated as inferior? As someone undeserving?
Of course she did. Every girl was born to that unfortunate truth.
