Already an admirer of David Ley, I have been waiting to read this book and to become more familiar with the arguments and criticisms of sex addiction as a diagnosis. Ley prefaces the book with a disclaimer that this is really meant for the lay reader. From the perspective of a lay reader, Ley does a thorough job in challenging assumptions made by "sex addictionologists" and other advocates of the diagnosis. As a clinician, Ley's book feels sloppy at times and left me wanting more information than what Ley provided.

Nevertheless, Ley's book should be welcomed as an important rejoinder against assumptions about male sexuality, sexual behavior, and the collision of psychological functioning and societal beliefs.

good central thesis but the last quarter devolves into outdated gender essentialism and evo-psych, which is frustrating - to say the least - from a book that purports to be against pseudoscience.
