Part 1 is slow and had me questioning all the good reviews, but part 2 and 3 were phenomenal! Will read book 2.

This book took me by surprise. I'd heard that it's very dark and graphic, and it definitely lives up to that description. The changes to the characters are so interesting, almost unexpected.
The violence is explained in extensive detail, which would be off putting if it wasn't all rooted in actual history.
Only thing keeping it from being a 5 star review is the weird pacing at times. One paragraph takes us forward 2 years in the middle of a chapter, and that was weird.

I really really enjoyed this book. The parallels between Nikan/Mugen and real life history of the Opium and Sino-Japanese wars were so interesting. Although the violence is pretty graphic, it was so well done and powerful, especially as the story is partially inspired by real-life events. I also loved the morally grey characters and Rin’s overall arc.

Although this book didn’t quite make it to 5⭐️, I don’t have any criticisms or things I didn’t like about it.

The writing is fantastic. The storyline is heavy and complex and the flow was extremely engaging. Im docking a star for 2 reasons: 1) the relationships between characters was largely underdeveloped- more told than grown. And 2) the gore and genocide atrocities were discussed in too much detail for me. She spent pages discussing and often revisiting horrific acts of violence and rape. I had to skim over large chunks just to get through the book. And a few times i nearly tabled it because of it. Outside of those 2 things I really enjoyed this book, the culture intertwined, and the style of writing.
