Convicted sex crazed serial killer and ex food writer Dorothy Daniels tells the story of how she went from eating in fancy restaurants to eating her men.

WHAT DID I THINK?
I don’t know if this was supposed to be funny but I found it amusing and very tongue in cheek. I loved the descriptive language used around everything she was eating, she made eating people seem quite appetising!  Although the descriptions were sometimes so detailed I forgot what she was talking about 😂 it did sometimes remind when you had to do an essay at school and use a thesaurus to change the words  😂 I enjoyed how the story worked it way up to how she got caught and the glimpses of prison life and more specifically, what she thought of prison food.

I didn’t like Dorothy, but I don’t think you’re supposed to. She was written so well and spoke with such an ego that she was a very believable psychopath.

All in all, refreshing for the serial killer to be a woman for a change but it’s definitely not going to make my favourites pile!

For fans of true crime who also ask themselves why we don’t hear about female killers more often

conflicted about this one. i did not enjoy the good first half of the book—I found it to be a slog to read through with a narrator I found deeply annoying and i loathe this particular brand of white femcel thinking. But I think Dorothy grew on me, like fungus. Summers has an incredibly captivating control of language and imagery, and Dorothy charmed me when she wasn’t full of her own shit around the end, when her humanity and love slipped out from under this performance she put on for her audience. It’s a book that grows on you. A book I wanted to hate for being pretentious and other reviews being like “omg she’s a girlboss. win for feminism.” when I found that those things barely scratch the surface of the complexity of this story and Dorothy’s character. I dunno. I’m glad I stuck through to the end.

This was a really interesting read, and I did really enjoy the visceral, descriptive writing style. The main character is fascinating, and is both relatable in some aspects and utterly horrifying in others. Good read, both entertaining and darkly philosophical at times. Definitely not for everyone, but I enjoyed it a lot!

This book was a masterpiece and so well written. So many times the descriptions of food genuinely made me so hungry, and that is saying a lot considering there is cannibalism in this book. But yeah this book was exactly my kind of book. I have been interested in true crime for a long time, so having the main character be a serial killer was super interesting. I also just love hearing about a confident and cool girlboss woman. I also thought the format of switching between the present and past was interesting. Although it did get rid of any suspense that would have been present if the reader didn’t know she got caught, it was still interesting to hear about how she got there.
But the writing was absolutely the standout of this book. It was written so incredibly well and I really tried to take my time and pour over every word of this book, and it paid off, because this book was amazing.
Read my personal copy.
