This one was a little too descriptive in parts, but still really great! I wish she would resolve her Ryan issues though....
I always feel like I’m constantly rolling my eyes at this woman. She’s always describing how she’s dressed inappropriately for the weather, needing a shower, not able to control her temper, feeding her pets people food, practicing her inadequate beauty skills, etc. I guess I put up with it because it adds a sense of realism to the character, and even though I like that she is well-defined within her fictional realm, it seems tedious. (And she’s an alcoholic, which, if you’ve read several of my other reviews, you’ll already know how uninterested I am in this character flaw. One hundred percent boring.) However, the cases are interesting, the forensics are fascinating, and I’m invested in her personal relationships, as much as it pains me to admit that.
Though a real shocker for someone who watches the television show, I'm glad I gave the book a try.
Pretty compelling read. I thought this one was better than many of the recent Tempe Brennan novels. However, I still find it somewhat disappointing when things get wrapped up so quickly and neatly at the end of the novel. And how many times can Brennan be knocked out or otherwise injured to wake up finding that all the threads of the mystery she's been pulling have been woven into complete tapestry?

If this was the first Reichs book I read, I don't know that I'd read any more. Nothing about it was memorable or unique enough to set it apart from other mystery books. There was a bit less of the smart/stupid Brennan than the last book, less of textbook explanation of various sciences, fewer rhetorical questions, but still too many for me. The other annoying bit about the writing was the "telling" not "showing" of action and emotion. The only example that comes to mind at the moment is "radiated like heat" -- why include the last two words when radiated already implies the heat? And all the telling regarding Tempe's emotions with Andrew Ryan. Made for boring scenes between them. Stop with the recollection of what happened and keep the action in the present! Even the "climactic ending" when, shocker, Tempe is kidnapped and 'almost' dies but Ryan bursts in at the exact right moment -- gee, didn't see that coming.
If the library had more good books on CD, I wouldn't be compelled to read this formulaic stuff.

Pretty good mystery involving voodoo, santeria, and Wicca. If you're into the series, not much happens to the characters, which is actually ok. Sometimes it seems like that detracts from the mysteries and anthropology in Reichs' books.
Her descriptions of departmental meetings for anthropology faculty made me laugh a lot. All the procedural stuff seems pretty accurate (unlike the tv show 'Bones').

Probably the most predictable of any Bones novel, still entertaining
