While I didn't love the premise of this book, Scalzi's writing more than makes up for that. The continuing partnership of Chris and Vann is just as fun as in the first novel, and their police work gets even more complex in this sequel to Lock In. I appreciated the commentary on the fluidity of gender and sexuality, ableism, and corruption in league sports. The "whodunnit" aspect of the book was well-written--I didn't guess the culprit until they were revealed toward the end of the novel. Scalzi's writing is as sharp as ever here, and if you liked Lock In, you should absolutely read Head On.

I really enjoyed this one and I was super engaged like I was with the last one, although like the last one the solution to the mystery got very convoluted. Still it was entertaining to listen to; Wil Wheaton does a pretty good job of differentiating characters. Overall I think if you enjoyed the previous one, you’ll like this one. Scalzi tries to set this one up so you don’t have to have read the previous one but I think you kind of have to read it first.
