I love the fiction of Thomas King, and I like his mysteries OK. The plots come together all of a sudden (too sudden for me), but I really love King's characters, and his sense of humor. He's a waaaay better writer than Tony Hillerman, so if you want to read mysteries that take place in "Indian country" by a Native Canadian author, pick up King instead.

An improvement on the last installment. It was nice to see Thumps solve both a cold case and a recent murder and the reality TV element helped the book feel less formulaic. In many ways this book brings Thumps to his lowest point. That meant that Thumps was a bit of an uninteresting sad sack throughout this novel, but I'm hopeful that it is setting up some sort of catharsis for Obsidian.

Thumps DreadfulWater returns home from Seattle where he has been with his girlfriend, Claire, while while she was treated for cancer. Things are looking good for her but as soon as they return home, she heads off somewhere without letting Thumps know.
Turns out that while he was away his car was wrecked, his cat ran away, and his diabetes has taken a turn for the worse.
A film crew offers him money to help them find out what really happened in the death of a young girl a few decades earlier. Thumps resists but when one of the crew dies in the same mysterious way, he ends involved.
Gotta love all the characters in this series. Each book feels like visiting old friends. I hate having to wait for the next in this series which, from the end of this one, appears to be when he solves the serial murders linked to his past.
