Cute! Not the typical category of book I have read previously (religious romance) but it was cute and I learned a lot about traditions in Orthodox Judaism that I didn’t know before.
The writing style was at times a little basic with a crabby, entitled, rich MMC because he’d be slighted by love before but overall it didn’t prevent me from enjoying the book overall. (Because well, there are plenty of other books I’ve read that are like that!)
It was nice having a mature FMC that faces real life worries in a real life space (taking care of family, pressures of having children, religion, age) and viewing it from a different lens.
As someone who really enjoys learning this was a fun, cute read that wasn’t overly heavy.

“I’m sweating like a mohel about to perform his first circumcision”. I absolutely loved the prominent Judaism in this romance! Our holidays, traditions, and values are showcased so beautifully and with humor!
I love that Penina, the main character, has a such a big heart and strong sense of self and I definitely would follow her influencer account in real life!
I also want to point out how much I appreciated the strong message of acceptance throughout this book! I will add though a TW for infertility. I wish I had that ahead of time personally.
Thank you @heidishertok @dreamscape @netgalley for the ARC!

This was really good! Iyswlf oscillate along the spectrum of Jewish observance so I was excited to read of an Orthodox/secular romance. The first half was hard to get through, honestly. I think it needed one or two more rounds of editing just to tighten up the story and characters. Once it got going, though, it was really good. Penina is a modest fashionista with (spoiler) infertility and she thinks she's unmarriageable. Sam is a completely secular man with some attachment issues. Penina gets with Zevi and I absolutely love him and their friendship; they both grow a lot in just a short time together and ultimately part ways. Penina is a bit dumb around this point of the story but we have to move the story along somehow I suppose. In the end it's really good and a nice look at how people with very different lifestyles can come together and make it work.
Love the representation but felt Sam wasn’t ever nice enough. Like he finally was nice when she was over it. Needed more romance before the romance if that makes sense.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Liked it, fun while I was reading it
This contemporary romance tells the story of Penina, a 29 year old woman who longs for true love and marriage, but being infertile in the Orthodox Jewish community means she’s rarely matched with the cream of the crop.
There's religious expectations, there's family drama, there's attraction with a boss, and an engagement of convenience. It was fun! Zany, at times, clever, funny, and sweet in other moments. The characters grow, and the love story was charming.
Having grown up Orthodox, all the customs and religious laws were very familiar to me, and the author, Heidi Shertok, did a really wonderful job explaining them. However, the narrator, Caitlin Thorburn, butchered the pronunciation of the Hebrew and Yiddish words, which pulled me out of the story many times. Once I was sensitive to that, I noticed some other very common English words were peculiarly pronounced as well... but I did like some of the accents that she used to distinguish the different characters.
Thank you to Dreamscape Media, NetGalley, and author Heidi Shertok for providing me with a digital ARC copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. Unorthodox Love is out July 11, 2023.

Penina is an Orthodox Jewish woman in her late twenties and still unmarried. Almost unheard of in her community. She has been on so many dates but hasn't found her soulmate yet. Then she meets Sam, who happens to be her boss and not Orthodox. With instant chemistry and banter for days, can these two find a way to be together?
This book was so fun to read! Penina was a character you could really root for. Her and Sam had great chemistry on the page. I wasn't sure how the barrier of Penina's religion was going to be resolved but it was handled really well! This book was rich in Jewish traditions, specifically Orthodox Jews. While Judaism plays a major role in this book, I never felt like it overwhelmed the romance part of the story. Great representation!
