I enjoy Elizabeth Gilbert’s writing, I think she’s incredibly talented and I plan on reading more of her work. The thing I disliked about this book is I’m always confused by people’s hatred of animals or lack of caring about their suffering. It’s just odd to me, especially when Elizabeth says she gave up meat for a time after someone told her she’s “eating the fear of animal at the moment of their death.” But then she goes on to eat the intestines of a newborn lamb? The way she talks about dead animals “chickens look so plump and contented even in death that you imagine they offered themselves up for sacrifice proudly, after competing among themselves in life to see who could become the moistest and the fattest.” I can assure you, chickens and all other animals don’t want to die for anyone’s meal. They want to live peacefully like the rest of us.
