Wow, this book was good. Not only was it informative and romantic but it was so well written. I knew absolutely nothing about Greenwood before seeing this book. It is so crazy to think that this really happened 100 years ago and people don't know anything about it. I love historical fiction, but an author that can make me love a romance too is something special. The characters were so well done and so real that I laughed and cried while reading this. I love that at the end the author says it wasn't meant to be a publish book and it definitely wasn't meant to be a historical fiction. She originally meant to to just be a romance between two black characters in a beautiful place. She also includes images of the real Greenwood and some facts and information at the back.

Angel and Isaiah are living in Greenwood, OK (aka Black Wall Street) in 1921. They barely know each other, but Isaiah has fallen in love with Angel after watching her dance. Angel slowly meets the “real” Isaiah, and she falls for him as well.

This was predominantly a romance novel set against the Tulsa Race Riot. The massacre itself literally happened in the last 15% of the novel, and it felt hurriedly dealt with. I struggled with reviewing this book because I felt the characters were interesting but the love story was boring. I wanted more of a historical fiction novel, but instead I got a romance.

This book is likely on a book ban somewhere in the US so please read this and encourage others!
This is listed as a young adult book but it leans more towards teen.

The plot and characters and character motivations are pretty simple. Angel was basically portrayed as a perfect character resulting in a lack of any sort of depth as the main female character. Muggy and Isaiah had a bit more depth.

While a lot of this book felt more like a lecture (a lot of tell and less show), my ignorance of the Greenwood Massacre allowed me to still remain interested and left me with a desire to read some more in depth books on this. I knew the story as a "race riot". It wasn't. It was a massacre that rarely gets talked about.

As the book was written more for teens a lot of the really horrible aspects of the massacre were glossed over a bit. It definitely made it feel not as awful as it like was. The way they immediately knew what was happening and knew they couldn't fight it really got to me. And the fact there never really was another Black Wall street again is also sad.

At some point I am going to try to write a coherent review of this book, but for now I’m just going to sit with it. In the meantime, I highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy.
