I rounded up for this one, 3.5 stars would probably be closer to my rating.
This is a hard story to tell especially because you know how it's going to end. You watch two teenagers fall in love with each other, help their community, learn about themselves in the world they surround themselves in - and you know it's all going to burn. Everything will be gone. It sucks because it's a true story, while this might be a fictionalized account of it.
*contains making out and racial violence*

The audiobook is stunning and moving.

I had to read this for school, but it was surprisingly good.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for this historical fiction novel. Told in two voices, this story follows a blossoming love against the backdrop of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots in the Greenwood neighborhood. Isaiah is known as a troublemaker, following his best friend Muggy’s bullying but loving the ideas of WEB DuBois. Angel is a good, rule-following, studious Booker T. Washington believer. The two find themselves thrown together for a project with their teacher, and when the worst happens to their neighborhood, they must find a way to save whoever they can - including each other. Recommended for grades 7+.

I am so grateful to have received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. I think this book needs to be immediately added to all United States high school reading requirement lists. The main characters may be fictional, but the feelings of a fully functioning town being demolished by hate are something I think we all need to learn about. This story is a historical fiction that draws you in. I had only finished reading 41% the past two days, but I had to read to the end tonight. I could not put it down!
