Well, I finally read this one! It’s easy to see why so many people loved this book. Isabelle and Vianne are two characters that will stick with me for a very long time. I loved that while they seemed incredibly different, at their cores, they were both trying to survive and do what they could to help others. It is a long book and understandably so, covering much of WWII, but I was never bored or waiting for action to happen. Even in the more mundane scenes of every day life, I felt completely swept up in this story. It is not an easy read, which I’m sure is obvious by the time period covered. The ruthlessness, cruelty and hatred the Nazis showed was unimaginable. I cried several times. However, there are still so many moments of great bravery, friendship and love in this book amid all the horrors going on. I’m very glad I read this book.

The rape scene is on the verge of being graphic, but it is brief and then mentions of injuries such as bruises are noted later. Antisemitism because it’s WWII and there is a lot of the story that centers around maltreatment of Jewish people. There is not extensive description of torture or concentration camps. There are a few scenes that describe war injuries fairly graphically which often lead to death. Some these were also children.

This book was a tearjerking, inspiring, dark historical fiction about German occupied France and the things the French did to fight the Nazi, help allies and survive the war. I was a mess finishing this book. The hang over is a lot. 
I'm going to share some quotes.

So amazing, heartbreaking, emotional, and beautiful. This book was worth every second and every page 🤍 The author writes in a way that makes you feel and truly connect with both main characters. I really appreciated the steady, but not too confusing, transitions between their points of view in the novel. Their growth was really so interesting and heartfelt to read. You truly connect and experience every single emotion with them. The story also highlights the strength and power in women in historical moments that are almost always surrounded around the highlights of men. You will feel empowered, scared, brave, ambitious, and extremely emotional. I love the female empowerment, romance, family and platonic love, and determination in the writing. The book shows that love is what can keep people strong in the most traumatic times. Wounds heal. Love lasts. 🩵
