The writing was beautiful. The story well researched. The characters were well rounded. I laughed. I cried. I loved.
the only reason I did not give this 5 stars was because I was able to predict the two “twist”

Wow! I didn’t think I could ever enjoy a historical fiction but this book proved me so wrong! This story about two sisters living through WWII in France was a work of art. The characters felt real and there was several times on the way to and from work where I audibly gasped from what happened in the audiobook. Even if you don’t like historical fiction, I recommend this book!!!!!

This book was a tearjerking, inspiring, dark historical fiction about German occupied France and the things the French did to fight the Nazi, help allies and survive the war. I was a mess finishing this book. The hang over is a lot.
I'm going to share some quotes.
"I know that grief, like regret, settles into our DNA and remains forever a part of us."
"The past has a clearity I can no longer see in the present."
"Does one follow a leader blindly?"
And my favorite.
"Americans. They didn't listen."

If I could give this book a 6 out of 5 🌟 I would definitely do so.
This book made me cry, gasp, be anxious, feel happy, and experience love - in all of its forms: sisterly, motherly, friendly, romantically, between companions - all at once. Even in the horrifying ambiance of WWII (and the cruel and violent actions of the Nazis) it felt hopeful and insightful of what hundreds of people had to live through and experience before they could reunite in peace.
The author made an incredible job giving a back story to all of the characters and use every one of them to tell a different side of the same war:
the sacrifice of mothers, the loss of innocence of children, the rupture of families, the kindness of passeurs, the risks taken by some soldiers and citizens, the resistence of humanity, the unconditionality of love, etc.

Felt this book specially close to reality because of the inability of humanity to stop on re-living wars, destruction and violence.
Times I cried:
- Sarah’s last night
- when they took Daniel away
- Julien’s letter to his daughters
- Isabelle’s last thoughts
Also… all of the hidden pieces of information were mind-blowing to me… (the sister who made it to the US)

I was slow to start and get into this book but the last 200 pages were emotional and captured me.
