What a beautiful, moving, heartbreaking, masterful book. This told the story of WW2 through the eyes of the French and was an insightful glimpse into how slowly but insidiously the Holocaust progressed. There were some scenes that were graphic and I cried a lot through the book, but the character and story arcs were immaculate. The pacing was also very smooth, despite covering long periods of time and even jumping into the future for some chapters.

The only pitfalls of this book were that it was hard to get into because it started rather slow, and it got a little preachy in its feminist messaging at times. But I truly loved this story.

This was an emotional read. Two sisters doing what they think is right to get through the war. One trying to save children and living with the enemy. The other joining the resistance and rescuing pilots.

This book is equal parts sad, inspiring, beautiful, and hopeful. It lives in the grey areas, like many things with war, and plucks at your heartstrings any chance it gets.

The writing was beautiful. The story well researched. The characters were well rounded. I laughed. I cried. I loved.
the only reason I did not give this 5 stars was because I was able to predict the two “twist”

📖 REVIEW 📖

The fact that I hadn't yet read this book made me ashamed to call myself a historical fiction girlie so when the mood struck to pick up a historical fiction read I knew I had to reach for The Nightingale. I had been so fatigued by WWII fiction and so this book has sat on my TBR, and my shelf for many years. Here's my thoughts.

➕️ Consumed, moved and addicted to reading this novel, especially the first 75%.
➕️How beautifully Kristin Hannah captures the fragility of life
➕️Engaging plot, love how the writer creates mystery in the contemporary time line
➕️The perspective of two French women who were impacted by the war on the home front

➖️Some incredibly graphic and harrowing scenes that were very uncomfortable to read. Recommend you check content warnings.
➖️ There was something lacking in Isabelle's love story. I wasn't overly invested because I couldn't grasp the chemistry between the two.

✍️ "I love you too," she said but the words that always seemed too big felt small now. What was love when put up against war?

🛍 I purchased my copy years ago from Mary Ryan's at New Farm
