I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't nearly as strong as book 1. The main issues here are two fold: first, the thing that was so good about book one was the relationship, and it was a stronger book because it knew that and kept the focus there. In contrast this book is trying, it seems, to set up a lot of things within the world for the remainder of the series, and to that end it focuses very heavily on the fantasy plot going on, which I just don't find all that compelling. Secondly, and more importantly, all of the tension is zapped out of the romantic relationship because the addition of a third point of view in this book provides the reader with information very early on (like literally within the first few pages of the book) that resolves the internal conflict that is motivating the romance throughout the remainder of the novel. Brishen and Ildiko remain excellent characters and their relationship is still wonderful; however, that just wasn’t enough to carry the book this time around. I will be continuing the series (mostly because I love the characters), but this was definitely a bit of a letdown.
