A young 14 year old girl ,Mary Jane,from. VERY conservative household is hired as a nanny for a family down the street that couldn’t be more different. The father is a psychologist who is taking in a famous musician and his famous wife for the summer to help with his drug addiction. Jimmy and Sheba stay for the summer incognito as they live in the Cones household. Mary Jane takes on the role of mothering adult to a group of people who can’t feed or clean up after themselves and find that completely normal. Mary Jane is used to the stereotypical house wife so finding a family who completely debunks that theory throws her world into a tailspin. She learns more of what is out there in the world and that not everything that her parents say is true. She learns how to start thinking for herself and loving who she is. Sometimes the un-adult characters drive me crazy but obviously that was the point the author was trying to make.

I rarely give 5 stars but this book was delightful. The story was different, the characters were engaging.

This 1970s coming-of-age story was an enjoyable and easy to devour summer read. Loved seeing Mary Jane's world, and heart, expand through her own eyes.

Her mother's evolution was a fun unexpected bonus.
