It's about the booktrade. Good. The main character is a big old jerk. Bad.

I read this with some friends and you can read all of our (more detailed) reviews at Triple Take.

This is a great mystery that leaves you guessing until the end. Cliff Janeway is more than likable in all his gruffness. My reading of this book has produced two major results: 1) I definitely want to read the next in the series and 2) I want to be a bookman!! (Or bookwoman.)

Not sure what I think about this book. I had trouble either liking or hating Janeway, I did not like how characters just disappeared ie first girlfriend is given a couple of lines later - with she is living with someone else, that was a bit weak. Lots unfinished business which means a series of books but I am not sure I am compelled to go on.
I did not mind that Janeway was not always right but it seemed to be the people around him that end up paying never him.
I think the best way to describe my reaction to this book is ambivalence.

Books, crime, sleuthing, and more books. I couldn't imagine better ingredients for a great book. I never realized the value books could have beyond the enjoyment I get from reading them.

Looking forward to what's to come in this series.

March 2016 Book Club selection - Cliff Janeway is a book loving detective who attracts trouble and sometimes takes things too far. When he takes his anger out on a hated suspect, he channels his energy into book collecting, and things just get dicier from there.

Found the beginning a little slow but got better in last half.

This was a bit Chandleresque. I half expected a line like “of all the used bookstores in Denver, she had to walk into mine”. Considering the book takes place in the mid 1980’s, the hard-boiled aspects of the story seemed a little out of place. A personal vendetta costs Cliff Janeway his job as a homicide detective. So he turns to his second love and opens a used bookstore specializing in first editions and rare books in the slightly seedy area of Denver known as Book Row. But he can’t put his past behind him and when an old case resurfaces and becomes personal, Janeway sets out to catch the killer. It was fun to read about various books and their values. Personally, if I had a mint condition first edition of any book worth a lot of money, I would sell it in a heart beat and put the money towards a new car or having my yard landscaped or something. I do have to fight against my hoarder’s tendency to buy books; however, my interest is in the content, not the book for the book’s sake
