I read this from a recommendation!
While this is a book from the early 2007’s which sometimes I found myself forgetting since I mainly read modernity published books. I loved it
The writing was a bit different but the Industry especially when it comes to paranormal romance has changed in the past 2 decades.
I loved the characters and pace of the book. It was nice to have less of a slow burn (all I’ve read lately it seems) since the book jumped weeks at a time.
I love Cat and loved watching her grow slowly as a person.
I loved Bones, who doesn’t love a sexy British vampire?
Their dynamic was so so so fun.
Eventually I will continue the series!

This was super fun if not a bit long. Didn’t care or feel for the romance as it felt strictly physical and the “i love yous” didn’t feel real.
I’m not hooked enough to continue the next book even though this ended on a cliffhanger. Maybe i will get back to it when I’m in the mood for something fun.
Make sure you listen to the graphic audio, 10/10 narration!!

3.5/5 stars!
I can’t quite decide if I liked this book or not. I really loved the gothic vampire theme and the touch of the early 2000’s aesthetic. I really loved the first 200 pages Bones made me laugh with his way of words and I really liked the theme and I found it was really exciting I thought Cat was an interesting badass character and I was so excited to read on that I even prematurely bought the second book.
But after page 200 it all went a bit down hill for me. Bones and Cat went from kind of enemies to lovers straight away even throwing around the I love yous!! I’m not a massive fan of the romances happening too quickly I love when it’s slow burning and il easily wait three or four books until characters get together or at least say the I love yous. Bones just became really mushy and cheesy and for the first 200 pages he was this over the top (sometimes even grotesque) with his way of words but he was charming and almost mysterious but after that he just became complete mush.
Even my feelings towards Cat went downhill. She became jealous very quickly and even slut shaming and even hating Francesca (who lets face it did nothing wrong but be attractive and be comfortable with her sexuality). She even called her a ‘tramp’ for the clothes she was wearing and even more she opened her mouth she said she didn’t like her because she was attractive. When she met her she shook her hand and the first thing she said was ‘ Hi I’m the girlfriend’ like?? No I don’t like that. I know this book was written over a decade ago but...seriously?
But one thing I must say is that the ending was amazing and I’m quite glad I actually bought the second book as it actually puts a bit of tension between bones and cat and I thought she really redeemed herself in the end with her killing and fighting all the vampires.
I also really liked Timmie as a character he honestly had the funniest of one liners and that’s one thing I can say about this novel is the one liners and the authors writing was hilarious that I found myself laughing out loud and some of things (mostly) Bones says. I want to see more of Spade as well so many other characters that didn’t get fleshed out properly. But then again I think this is a vampire romance novel I don’t think the intention was it to be so deep but still!

Audiobook review
I recently jumped the queue and landed on [b:Once Burned|7039218|Once Burned (Night Prince, #1)|Jeaniene Frost|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1335738276s/7039218.jpg|7288100] which I fairly enjoyed but found its reference to Cat and Bones the reason to start from the beginning. This series has been on my list of read/listens for ages. So low and behold, I caught up with the start of the series.
I was tempted several times to DNF- not for storyline but Tavia Gilbert's Bones accent.

I'm British and this was so major cringe. I give her claps for attempting a 'hard' accent, but it was Dick van Dyke Mary Poppins rescue to my ears. Aside from this, Her other accents were quite distinctive and her 'Cat" voice was a strong one.Speaking of Cat, I loved her. She was the reason alone I kept going. She and Bones were sexy, edgy and she was so kickass, I love a strong heroine. Bones as many of the reviews note, couldn't get Spike from "Buffy' out of my head as his likeness. Although doing a quick google search for "dream cast" paint's a very sexier dark haired man. I might go with the second as although I'm a Buffy fan ,Spikes hair never done it for me. I also really liked that Bones was enraptured by Cat and feel in love with her way before it occurred to Cat. He wasn't afraid to voice his options and thoughts.
The novel has not "aged' well, some of the references were a bit outdated, one that springs to mind is the 'joke" of " I thought I saw a pussycat...." really......this wasn't funny 50 years ago. A tad cringe at times, but in general I really liked it.
A solid 4*, I've purchased the next one despite my fear of the accent but it is my cross to bear.

This was a lot of fun but not the most original take on the genre
While perusing Libby for audiobooks, I saw First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World) and my interest was sparked. I thought it would be a good idea to start at the beginning and not just jump into a follow up series. Totally the right decision!
As with any first book in a series, there is a lot of backstory and world building, and the relationships between main and secondary characters are established. While Cat is young at 22, she's never really had a normal childhood. She is a perfect mix of innocence blended with a knowledge of violence and the existence of evil in the world. But her world view has been shaped by her mother, who as a victim of date rape, has an understandably skewed view of the vampire world. But is humanity really less evil? Can a vampire be a good person? Cat's assumptions about the world and her own actions are challenged by Bones.
Bones and Cat are just what the other needs; both are loyal, strong, protective of the innocent, and willing to sacrifice for the good of others. Through Bones's training and teaching about the vampire world, Cat develops into a valuable partner for Bones, but he also helps to heal Cat's insecurities and past emotional trauma. Cat's character grows so much in this book, and by the end is a woman who knows what is most important to her, how much she is willing to sacrifice to protect those she loves, but also to set boundaries for those trying to use her. I didn't see the end scene coming, but it just shows what a strategist Cat has become. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and just saw that there is a book coming out this spring from Bones' POV!

This shit is cray cray. What the hell was going on in the early aughts
I picked this up in an attempt to fill the Karen Marie Moening-shaped hole in my heart, but it just didn't work for me. The paranormal romance/urban fantasy genre is definitely more of an art than a science, and this one wasn't to my taste. Onwards!
