Loved this wonderful historical romance! Jess's voice was so strong and rich and I fell for Sebastien from the start.

Jess Whitby learned how to survive on the streets when her father abandoned her as a young girl. She's an expert thief, and she's even better at keeping her father's shipping business running. But her father is set to hang, and the man who charged him is Captain Sebastian Kennett, and one look at Jess and he's hopelessly in love already. But he'll need to separate Jess-the-Woman from Jess-the-Daughter-of-a-Traitor from Jess the Hand who built her reputation as a fierce thief from a young age. She's convinced her father is innocent, but time is running out to prove it.

This didn't grab me the same way The Spymaster's Lady did. Some of this was likely circumstantial for me while reading, but the book felt longer with more plot than it needed. That said, I do enjoy a kidnapping, and there were several here, so bonus for that. It was a lost opportunity for me to not have more of the book take place on ships, though, since both our main characters have strong ties to the sea.

Not as good as the first book in the series, but still enjoyable. The bad guy(s) were pretty obvious from fairly early on though. Both Jess and Sebastian were frustratingly obtuse at times, and Sebastian’s constant sexualization of Jess got old fast. But Jess was a great character, very complex and interesting, and the plot was intriguing.

So good!!! Jess is such a smart heroine in so many ways - book smart, street smart and somewhat heart smart. Sebastien was a good foil for her, though I didn't like him as much as Jess. It was so interesting to learn about everything involved in running a shipping business and see the world through the eyes of someone who calculates price and profit on all the items she sees. Plus I love historicals that aren't afraid to get the characters dirty, or have people who don't roam in high society.

I did call the villain after a significant action on one character's part, though I thought that the siblings reaction ran a little false and was hoping for some mis-direction. A minor quibble and not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the book.

At first I didn't remember/realize that Doyle was the same guy as the hero of [b:The Forbidden Rose|7099471|The Forbidden Rose (Spymasters, #3)|Joanna Bourne|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1383019558s/7099471.jpg|7357200] and pictured someone COMPLETELY different. I did know that Adrian was the hero of a later book. The business of being published out of chronological order is very confusing and I'm going to read them in the (non author recc'd!) order of which events happen, not the publishing order.

Meh... Liked it, didn't love it. Seemed to me that this had much more potential to go into a multi-book series and it got cut short.

;)

Not the best in this series, but still entertaining! It definitely was not as good as #4. It could have done with more editing, and more substance for the hero and heroine. It felt like there were some recycled character elements, which is not all that surprising when your characters all do semi-legal work for a living. They had plenty of meat for internal conflict, but...

They just seemed surprisingly forgettable to me, especially considering the other books in this series. Even the first book, which is more uneven, had oomph. This one just didn't have that.
