Pop Sugar Reading Challenge-a book with a family tree.

I love PG's books. They're not always 100% historically accurate, but I've seen worse. She really does bring you into the head of the characters she creates and lets you see how stupid decisions may have not seemed so stupid at the time.

3 1/2 stars

This has to be hands down the saddest Phillipa Gregory I have ever listened to.

Jane Grey – queen for 9 days, more pious than the Pope, eldest of the Grey sisters and to be honest not the most riveting character to read about (sorry Jane)

Catherine Grey – married in secret for love and paid a price so so much higher than she ever expected. This character will stay with me for a long time.

Mary Grey – dwarf-like little doll, more outspoken than her sisters but ultimately also fated to be crushed under the thumb of a jealous, paranoid queen.

I don’t read a lot of Phillipa Gregory and had not been for the amazing Bianca Amato doing the audio narration I may not have considered this book at all. I know very little of Elizabeth 1 but this book gave me a glimpse that made me a little sick.

It’s one thing to read about a mad king because let’s face it, there is a level of macabre fascination that surrounded Henry 8, but Elizabeth was something different.

A woman that relished in her cruelty and vindictiveness in an era where women were mere property. You would expect that she would not focus her hatred so intensely onto her female counterparts, that she would understand how difficult it is to survive in such a male dominated world.

I know Elizabeth had to basically scratch and claw her way onto the throne and she just kept on scratching and clawing once she got there.

I have to admit that this was not my all-time favourite Tudor book but it was worth the experience of learning about these lesser known cousins to Elizabeth I.

Audio version recommended!

I just couldn’t. I didn’t even get through Jane’s section. The way she is written is unbearable. This is my first audiobook, so maybe that had something to do with it too.

I’m often drawn to stories of Lady Jane, how she was a pawn of her family’s amibitions and her ultimate tragic end. It’s a sad tale and while I know how her story ends, I am interested in the intrigue and the politics that eventually lead to her untimely death. “The Last Tudor” did not focus mainly on Jane though, but rather her and her two sisters and I would say more focus was given to Katherine and Mary than to Jane. This novel actually is split into three books. The first focuses on Jane, the second Katherine, and lastly on the youngest of the sisters, Mary. I had never read anything about Jane’s sisters so this was all new to me and if I thought Lady Jane had it bad … poor Katherine is all I have to say. Overall, I enjoyed the novel as I enjoy most of Phillipa Gregory’s books. Was this one of her best novels? I would say no, but I thought it was a solid tale.
sad tense slow-paced

Fascinating. I love the mixture of facts and what the author perceives about the characters. The machinations of the Tudor court brought to life in an entertaining way. The author has clearly loved and researched this period of history and created a world that’s very hard to leave.

Didn't finish. I'd rather read the wiki entry.

I tried reading this one before; Jane was a difficult character to like. This book made me curious to go read the actual histories as Mary was quite interesting.
A well written read and enjoyable.
