Not my cup of tea. Very repetitive, even for a children's book. Just felt very bland, not the type of story that warms the hearts of children and adults alike. The plot reads more like a picture book.

I loved the first tale in this 3 part collection the best. I read it aloud to my 6 year old and we both enjoyed it.

Second read through - with the younger two this time. A simple but unique story that they've all really enjoyed. Easy and enjoyable to read aloud.

Over a period of six nights, I read these tales aloud to my six-year-old son, Luke, and three-year-old daughter, Kajsa. Last night after finishing the book I asked Luke if he enjoyed the stories. "I loved it," said Luke. (Meanwhile, Kajsa got far too squirmy to pay much attention after the first 10 minutes of any story). Luke ate it up though. The first of these three tales was published back in 1948! They concern the adventures of a young boy named Elmer Elevator and a baby dragon that he rescues in the first tale. Cute, light-weight stuff with a few illustrations sprinkled throughout. The end papers of the book are two different maps of the story’s environs. Luke wants to make his own maps now.

I have read this set several times to my grandsons (reading again to the youngest now) and they love it. I do change a few words / phrases. Example: Elmer's mother "beats" him. I say "punishes" him.

I don't think I'd ever read beyond the first story, and I enjoyed reading this with my 5 year old. It's old-fashioned, but has a simple, timeless feel, and is very charming and sweet. We both enjoyed the artwork too.

ETA: We liked it so much we read the whole thing again!

10/2020 - And again! :)
