I really enjoyed this. It wasn’t a super exciting, heart racing fantasy. It was really relaxing, despite the dark elements. I really loved each of the characters. I liked the magical system and the fairytale influences. I will say, in no way did I feel this was a horror so I don’t know why this is shelved under that. It’s purely a fantasy with a romantic subtext - less romance than One Dark Window so not for people who only want romantasy. All in all, I enjoyed this. Glad I saved it for spooky season.

The beginning did start of rather slow even with the original mystery set-up that I thought I wasn't going to like Marra as a narrator, but when she met up with the rest of the main cast they were all so funny together than I didn't want to put it down.

I don't know why, but award-winning things - be it movies, TV shows, or books - more often than not bore me out of my mind. Going into this, I didn't know this book had won any awards, but I'd seen lots of great reviews and wanted to try something new. Well, unfortunately for me, it didn't go so well.
I really liked the premise, but despite how intriguing it sounded at first, I just didn't like how it was executed. The story moves at a glacial pace, I felt like the MC didn't have the faintest clue of what she was doing, and I did not connect with any of the characters. Also, there are different types of quirkiness. On a scale from adorable to annoying, I wouldn't place any of the characters anywhere close to where I'd ideally want them.
Given how highly regarded this book is, it seems that I am simply not the right audience. And that's okay.
